Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa
Breakfast at the hotel and leave for Polonnaruwa to visit the second capital of the island for two centuries and now overgrown by the jungle. Many vestiges and ruins of temples are scattered throughout the forest and make and unforgettable landscape : the statue of Prakrama Bahu, and the temples of Vatadage and Galvihara. Lunch in a local restaurant and the return to Sigiriya and visit the the “Lion Rock of Sigiriya, a massive column of red stone rock which dominates the jungle and upon which is built a palace and fortress of legend. *** Take a short elephant ride at Habarana. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 04
Sigiriya / Anuradhapura / Mihintale / Aukenta / Sigiriya
Breakfast at the hotel and thereafter leave for a full day excursion to Anuradhapura which was the capital of the country for 1400 years. Under the patronage of three major Buddhist monasteries,Anuradhapura expanded around 3 huge stupas built in the memory of Buddha. City sightseeing of Anuradhapura and also visit the “Bodhi Tree”, reputed to be 2200 years old and was grown from a branch of the tree under which Buddha received enlightenment in Bodhgaya ( North India ). Lunch in a local restaurant. Then visit the religious sites of Mihintale and Aukana (Site famous for its colossal statue of a Buddha blessing dating from the fifth century BC, one of the oldest in Sri Lanka and also one of the best preserved. It is carved directly into the rock, 15 meters high making it one of the largest in the world. ) Thereafter, return to Sigiriya. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 05
Sigiriya / Dambulla / Matale / Kandy
Breakfast at the hotel. Thereafter leave for Kandy. On the road to Kandy, stop at the Dambulla cave temple, a monastery whose five cave sanctuaries are fully decorated with Buddhist paintings. Continue to Matale and visit a spice garden. The warm, moist climate is perfect for growing spices necessary to prepare savoury curries and Sri Lankan cuisine. Lunch at Matale. Arrive Kandy late in the afternoon. Take a tour of the lake and visit the famous " Temple of the Tooth," one of the most sacred places of Buddhism and home to the relic of the “Tooth of Buddhat”. The Tooth of Buddha was brought to Sri Lanka in the fourth century. Visit the three temples : Lankathilaka, Gadaladeniya and Embekke. In the evening see a Kandyan Dance Performance. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 06
Kandy / Pinnawala / Peradeniya / Kandy
Breakfas at the hotel and leave to visit the Pinnawela elephant orphanage where abandoned orphan elephants are looked after and reared. Lunch at Pinnawela along the river Mahaoya. Thereafter return to Kandy and visit the botanical garden of Peradeniya. Before the arrival of the English, it was a royal park. Today it is the largest garden in Sri Lanka. It has a wondrous collection of orchids, palms planted the driveway in 1950 and gigantic Javanese fig trees. Take a tour of the city of Kandy and visit a handicrafts workshop of jewellery and precious stones. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 07
Kandy / Gampola / Nuwara Eliya
Breakfast at the hotel and thereafter transfer to the railway station and leave for Gampola. Upon arrival, continue by road to Nuwara Eliya. On the way to Nuwara Eliya, visit a tea plantation where tea tasting is possible. In the 19th century, the English made ​​Nuwara Eliya a hill station to escape the heat. Kataragama / Galle / Sinharaja Rainforestt / West Coast
Breakfast at the hotel. Then leave for Galle, a city declared a World Heritage by UNESCO in 1988. Discover the fortifications of the city founded in the sixteenth century by the Portuguese, which reached its peak in the eighteenth century, before the arrival of the British. This is the best example of a fortified city built by Europeans in South and South- East Asia, showing the interaction between European architectural styles and traditions of South Asia. Successive colonial invaders and traders were attracted to the natural harbour of Galle. The Dutch strengthened the fortress and built beautiful buildings before being driven out in turn by English settlers Lunch in a local restaurant in Galle Then visit the Sinharaja RAIN FOREST reserve by foot with a local specialised guide…. Located in the southwest of Sri Lanka, Sinharaja is the last viable area of ​​primary tropical rainforest in the country. More than 60 % of the trees are endemic and many of them are considered rare. Endemic fauna is numerous, including birds and 50% of mammals and butterflies, as well as many kinds of insects, reptiles and rare amphibians. ATTENTION: The reserve is full of leeches ! Bhubaneshwar / Delhi ( Flight ) / International Airport
Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to the airport and leave by flight for Delhi. Upon arrival, lunch in a local restaurant and afternoon at leisure to visit the bazaars of New Delhi. Dinner in a local restaurant and thereafter transfer to the international airport. *** A room will be made available at a hotel for a quick wash and change before leaving for the airport.
